Undocumented Immigrants Actually Pay Billions Of Dollars In Taxes, Even Today!

The Bipartisan Policy Center, a Washington-based think tank, notes that "most experts believe the vast majority of tax returns filed with ITINs today are filed by undocumented immigrants."

President Donald Trump recently mentioned how there's a national emergency at the “very dangerous southern border" and called it an invasion undocumented immigrants endangering the lives and livelihoods of hardworking American citizens. This was one of the many reasons why he wanted to build 'the wall' so that immigrants could not cross over to the US.  Trump also added that these undocumented immigrants actually cost the US taxpayers a lot of money, but according to CNN, that's not the case. Though it is ignored and not really spoke about, undocumented immigrants actually pay billions of dollars in federal taxes annually, according to experts, between tax returns filed and taxes deducted from paychecks.

According to the National Immigration Law Center, there are a number of reasons why an immigrant files his/her taxes. It demonstrates that they are complying with federal tax laws, which makes it easier for them to prove that they have "a good moral character" if at all they are presented with an opportunity to legalize their citizenship. Immigrants can use tax returns to document their work history and physical presence in the U.S. In order to be eligible for legal immigration status under any future immigration reform, people who currently are unauthorized to be in the U.S. most likely will have to be able to prove that they have been employed and have lived continuously in the U.S. for a certain number of years.

A lot of people also spoke about how these undocumented immigrants are able to pay their taxes because they have stolen Social Security numbers and are using them. Thing is, they don't need social security numbers to file taxes, they have their own identification numbers known as the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). According to the website, an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS). An ITIN consists of nine digits, beginning with the number nine (i.e., 9XX-XX-XXXX). Since 1996, the IRS has issued ITINs to taxpayers and their dependents who are not eligible to obtain a Social Security number (SSN).

Taxpayers who file their tax return with an ITIN include undocumented immigrants and their dependents as well as some people who are lawfully present in the U.S., such as certain survivors of domestic violence, Cuban and Haitian entrants, student visa–holders, and certain spouses and children of individuals with employment visas. As of August 2012, the IRS had assigned 21 million ITINs to taxpayers and their dependents.

The Bipartisan Policy Center, a Washington-based think tank, notes that "most experts believe the vast majority of tax returns filed with ITINs today are filed by undocumented immigrants." It is not just immigrants that use this method to pay their taxes, it has been assumed that some others, like some noncitizens who legally immigrated to the United States also pay taxes using this method.

In 2015 alone, 4.35 million tax returns were filed using ITINs, accounting for more than $13.6 billion in taxes. Experts have also estimated that in addition to tax return filings, undocumented immigrants also contribute billions to Social Security annually through payroll tax deductions. In 2010 alone, the Social Security Administration estimated that payments from unauthorized workers accounted for about $12 billion in tax revenue for Social Security.

Camber York wrote on Facebook: Amazon pays 0 tax dollars. But yes... let's blame immigrants. They've been the scapegoat since the dawn of time, why change?  Juli Carl Vandermeulen said: No they don't. They work off the books because they are not documented and will not risk it. They don't pay taxes. Ruby Love commented: Everyone pays taxes in America except #DontheCon. But thanks to some kickass Congressional members, Attorney Generals and tenacious staffers that’s about to change!

Adolfo Gonzalez wrote: let’s deport all these tax dollars!! No worries America, we got coal, we can tax big beautiful coal! Or, wait, we can have Mexico pay for it! Or we can make Mexico pay for Space Force because trump supporters will believe anything that comes out of the mouth of Putin’s Agent Orange! Harry Clark commented: So they pay taxes but are ineligible for benefits and can be poorly treated and threatened if they speak up. Why don't we just have a one hour to get visiting worker status? With modest fines for violations.
