'It's crazy to me that they are twins and have different birthdays,' the twins' mother said.
Fatima Madrigal and Robert Trujillo of Greenfield, California, entered the new year on a high note with the birth of their fraternal twins Alfredo and Aylin. The birth of the baby boy and girl turned out to be extra special for the parents and the Natividad Medical Center—where the children were delivered—as the pair celebrated their births on different days, months and years in what is an extremely rare occurrence. According to PEOPLE, little Aylin was born right when the clock struck midnight on New Year's Day; 15 minutes after her brother Alfredo came into the world on New Year's Eve at 11:45 p.m. local time.
"Natividad is excited to announce we welcomed Monterey County’s first baby of 2022! Greenfield twins Aylin and Alfredo Trujillo were born just 15 minutes apart, but what makes their birth so rare is that they were born on different days, months and years," the Natividad Medical Center wrote in a Facebook post celebrating the twins' birth. "Aylin Yolanda Trujillo entered the world exactly at midnight on Saturday, January 1, making her the first baby born at Natividad Medical Center and in Monterey County in 2022. Her twin brother, Alfredo Antonio Trujillo, delivered first at 11:45 pm on December 31, 2021. Aylin weighed in at 5 pounds, 14 ounces, while big brother Alfredo weighed 6 pounds, 1 ounce."
"There are about 120,000 twin births in the U.S. every year, making up just over 3% of all births. However, twins with different birthdays are rare, and some estimate the chance of twins being born in different years as one in 2 million," the post explained. Sharing how she feels about her newborn kids' unique birthdays, their mom Madrigal said: "It's crazy to me that they are twins and have different birthdays. I was surprised and happy that she arrived at midnight." Dr. Ana Abril Arias, a family doctor at Natividad Medical Group and faculty at Natividad, also shared in the joy of the twins' special birth dates.
"This was definitely one of the most memorable deliveries of my career," said Dr. Abril Arias. "It was an absolute pleasure to help these little ones arrive here safely in 2021 and 2022. What an amazing way to start the New Year!" Alfredo and Aylin now join three older siblings — two girls and a boy. Madrigal revealed that her oldest son is thrilled to have a baby brother and that the rest of their family is excited to meet the new members.
Aylin and Alfredo's births also spread smiles on social media as internet users congratulated the twins' parents for the unique New Year's gift and showered the babies with blessings. "What a great story to tell! Welcome little ones and congratulations to their families," commented Debbie Dias Benson. "Adorable, both of them. Congratulations to the family!!! What an amazing story to have forever," wrote Tory Bright. "Congratulations! I have a New Years' baby as well! First one born in Monterey county in 1996! Fun times every year! Enjoy," shared April Liedtke.
"Adorable. Welcome to the world little ones, congratulations to you both on your bundles of joy and happiness," commented Gabbie Perez. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are about 120,000 twin births every year in the United States every year. Such births make up just over 3 percent of all births, the organization states.
