These 'tiny medical homes' for the aged can be also be installed in a garage and come with modern amenities.
When it comes to the care of the aged and elderly, one is faced with a lot of dilemmas. Will they be comfortable staying in with their children and grandchildren? Will care homes provide the warmth and love of a family? A product designed by a firm called MedCottages wants to be the solution and aims at somewhere between the desires of the aged and their needs. The company has come up with tiny 'medical homes' that can be easily installed outside in the backyard and works as an 'alternative to nursing homes.' The company's 'granny pods' are not just one of those homes that can be made with off the shelf tools from a local hardware store. This is a special pod that has all the modern amenities designed for the care of the elderly.

However, these granny pods will leave a significant dent in your wallet. They are priced between $100,000 to $250,000. According to Country Living, these homes have a lot of high-tech medical extras and are made of pre-fabricated material. These pods can easily be compared to a 'nice hotel suite' or even a 'bungalow from the outside.' The pod comes with a space for a bed, living room kitchenette and bathroom. There are also defibrillators, first aid supplies, railings lighted floorboards and a soft floor to cushion falls. The pods have a dimension of 12 by 24 feet and also feature French doors. In addition, it can also accommodate hospital equipment and a wheelchair.
The homes come in three variants - Living ROO, Mothership, and the MedCottage Classic redesign - states the company's website. The first one has also been named as the 'Garage Pod' and "is designed for inside the garage. It comes in a kit so the homeowner can assemble inside a two-bay garage. The windows are HD monitors, framed as windows with a corresponding HD camera outside creating the illusion of seeing out." So far as the second one is concerned, the website notes, "Rehabilitation Pod is zoning soft. It’s designed on an RV platform and can be placed in ninety percent of the municipalities in the US. It can be leased at a much less cost. It will be outfitted for extended care or short term rehab."
The MedCottage Classic redesign "...will come as a kit. You may assemble it yourself or hire a local contractor to install your MEDCottage." The pods have been designed by Blacksburg, VA, company, with the aid of Virginia Tech. known as 'granny pods.' The company's website added, "Our Product is designed as an affordable alternative to nursing homes. The MEDCottage is a mobile, modular medical dwelling designed to be temporarily placed on a caregiver's property for rehabilitation and extended care. Simply stated, it's a state-of-the-art hospital room with remote monitoring available so caregivers and family members have peace of mind knowing they are providing the best possible care. Close proximity is so important when keeping family engaged in our life. This solution provides a beautiful dwelling close to the people we love."
It added, "Fundamental to family caregiving is proximity to the one needing care. There is a connection between the number of visits and the physical distance from family. Additionally, is the satisfaction factor, the experience must be enjoyable for both. It's unlikely we’ll continue something that’s not enjoyable or difficult to achieve. Closeness with a degree of privacy is huge in making this happen."
