Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Bindi Irwin and Chandler Powell decided not to have guests at their wedding.
Bindi Irwin and Chandler Powell are finally married! The two tied the knot on Wednesday at the Australia Zoo The Coronavirus pandemic has had people postpone or cancel big events, so the newlywed couple decided to have a small ceremony instead. Bindi shared the news on Instagram of marrying her best friend. Although they've been planning the wedding for a year, they didn't have guests at the wedding, she wrote.
Bindi captioned the photo: March 25th 2020 ❤️ We held a small ceremony and I married my best friend. There are no words to describe the amount of love and light in my heart right now. We’ve planned this beautiful day for nearly a year and had to change everything, as we didn’t have guests at our wedding. This was a very difficult decision but important to keep everyone safe. We wish all of our friends and family could have been there with us, however it’s lovely that we will be able to share photos and videos. Right now we’re encouraging the world to hold onto hope and love, which will carry us forward during this profound time in history.
The family was a close part of the occasion, of course. Bindi revealed that her mum helped her get ready and as promised, her brother Robert was the one to walk her down the aisle. The family "lit a candle in Dad’s memory. We shared tears and smiles and love. Thankfully, since we all live at Australia Zoo as a family, we could be there for each other. To everyone reading this — stay safe, social distance and remember LOVE WINS!” she wrote.
The couple got engaged on July 24 last year on Bindi’s 21st birthday. The two had been dating for 6 years and had first met in November 2013. Powell, a Florida native and former professional wakeboarder, traveled to Australia for a competition, reports People. He happened to visit the zoo where Irwin lives and works on a family trip. “It just so happened that Bindi was giving tours that day,” he recalled to the outlet in December. “I’m like, ‘Wow she is amazing.'”The pair “hit it off right away,” he said, adding, “We haven’t looked back since.”
The daughter of the late renowned crocodile hunter Steven Irwin was ecstatic to share the news of her engagement last year. At the time, she said, “I am overjoyed to be sharing the news that Chandler and I are engaged! This has been the most special day celebrating my 21st birthday. I’ve met my soulmate and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with Chandler. We’ve been together for nearly 6 years now and he’s my happily ever after.” The news is a joyous one especially for a young girl who's been through such a tragedy at a young age. The young conservationist lost her father back in 2006 in a tragic incident involving a stingray. She was only 8 years old. Ever since then, the family including Steve’s wife Terri, and the children Bindi and Robert have worked hard in their animal conservation efforts.
The reason Bindi wanted her brother to walk her down the aisle was that " I think that's what dad would have wanted as well," she said. "I'm always so grateful that Robert is there, and he has been such a big part of my life and he's always stepped up and been the one to give me a hug when I need it and encourage me forward in life," Bindi shared. "So he will definitely be the one to walk me down the aisle when the time comes, and I think that will make it really special."
She shared photographs of her engagement on Instagram last year where her brother secretly captured the loving moments of the soon-to-wed couple. Powell, 23, popped the question to the Animal Planet star only after he got the family's approval. Bindi is sure her father would be proud of her brother and would have easily welcomed Powell into the family. According to People, on one of her posts on Instagram, she wrote: Dad, you would be so incredibly proud of Robert. He has been such amazing support during this beautiful new life chapter. I know you’d be beaming with pride when the time comes that he walks me down the aisle. I wish you could be here for these moments, but I know that your spirit lives on in us. Bindi previously said she couldn’t be happier to have found a partner who shares so many of her father’s qualities. “He loves wildlife and conservation and he has this strength — which is necessary when you’re jumping on crocs!” she said. A wedding special will be coming soon to Animal Planet. So keep your eyes peeled!
