Muslim Man Wants To Move Out Because He Was Tricked By Boyfriend Into Eating Pork On His Birthday

The man took to Reddit to share his experience and asked Reddit if he was overreacting.

There are some people who are very religious, following the scriptures and traditions to a T while there are some who don't want anything to do with it. And then, there are those who might be in the middle. However, religious or not, if one happens to be in a relationship with someone who does not align with their views on such matters, there needs to be respect between the two parties. Otherwise, it can turn into a difficult situation quite quickly. Take the case of this 20-year-old Muslim Redditor who was angry that his boyfriend deliberately put pork in his food without telling him. His faith forbids eating pork for various reasons. He wrote on Reddit: I..go to a culinary arts university in America and stay with my bf L(21M). He is American and an atheist while i'm born and raised a Turkish Muslim. Since we both go to cooking school, we change the cooking chore daily without a problem.

While he might seem religious, the college student also clarified that he was actually "a rather progressive person" and even cut ties with his "uber-religious" father. His boyfriend, who simply referred to as "J", also knew this. He added: it was J's turn to cook and he told me he would make breakfast for the weekend. So Saturday morning (which was my birthday) he comes to my room with some food and blindfolds me saying there is a surprise. Then he says he made something on the table and we walk there. The Redditor took a bite of the food and immediately realized something was wrong. "I take a bite and it was pork," he wrote. He could not believe he was subjected to such a prank - especially on his special day.

He wrote: so i was of course incredibly aggravated. I took the blindfold immediately and asked why he did this. His boyfriend, on the other hand, was having the time of his life. He added: He was in hysterics and thought this was SOO funny. I told him it was disrespectful and he shouldn't disrespect my religion. He scoffed off saying i was overreacting and that i wasn't that religious anyway so he thought it wouldn't be an issue. The Redditor stated he was thinking of moving out of the house and getting a place of his own after the incident. When he recounted this story to his brother, his brother thought it was a bit of an "overreaction." Confused, he asked users on the platform if he was being an a**hole for reacting the way he did. However, the collective opinion on that thread seems to be that the boyfriend was wrong and he should dump him.

One commentator wrote: He ENJOYED making him feel less than. He KNEW he did NOT want to eat this. Abusive people start with violating small boundaries and escalate over time. Your brother is wrong, your boyfriend is disrespecting you and you deserve better. I really hope for a break up update. I don't see this relationship headed anywhere good. Some said the issue was not about religion, but about "respect." Willowed-Wisp wrote in this vein: Seriously. Even if OP is rather progressive or not that religious, if she doesn't eat pork, he needs to respect that. Instead, he made it into a joke. That's completely disrespectful and inappropriate. And that's the ultimate problem- this isn't an argument about pork. It's an argument about respect. Pork may not be worth moving out over, but disrespect absolutely can be.

Others like LastKingOfEarth called the boyfriend "a**hole" who was a blot on atheists: I have several friends who are atheists, and none of them would try and pull that kind of crap on our Jewish and Muslim friends. And while some of them, including my Turkish Muslim sister-in-law are somewhat religious, they occasionally enjoy pork, specifically bacon.
