Couple With Down Syndrome Defies Odds To Celebrate 24 Years Together; Prove Their Love Is True

The story of this couple is quite inspirational as they prove that anyone can overcome anything if they set their minds to it.

There's no stopping this couple who have certainly beaten all odds to prove that all it takes is love to be together. Maryanne and Tommy Pilling will be celebrating their 24th wedding anniversary soon. They have overcome so many problems together, including dealing with the hate and criticism that they tackled with since they both have Down Syndrome. They met each other at a local training center for people with learning difficulties. The connection was instant, and they dated each other for 18 months before Tommy popped the question to Maryanne. He asked her to marry him with a toy ring from a vending machine after her mother gave him her blessing.

In July 1995, they tied the knot at a church in Essex, where they were surrounded by supportive friends and family. "They love one another dearly, respect one another and are completely honest," Maryanne’s sister, Linda Newman, tells PEOPLE. It was definitely not a smooth ride for them as both of them faced a lot of flak for their decision to get married to each other.

Linda Newman also added that her mother had to go through severe criticism for letting them get married, but they have proven everyone wrong, because, 23 years later, Tommy and Maryanne are very happy and they say their relationship is stronger than ever. "My wedding was the best day of my life. I was shocked when Tommy proposed, but I didn’t have to think twice about saying yes," said Maryanne, according to a report by The Independent.

"Tommy and I never argue," she added. "I love my husband very much. He is my best friend." The couple lives independently in Essex with Maryanne’s mother living next door and her sister and her family just a few houses down. Maryanne's sister started a Facebook page for both of them so that their story can be shared with other people.

"Maryanne and Tommy first met in 1990 while working in a local training center for people with disabilities. Fate brought them together because they shared the same passion for cooking so they both were helping in the kitchen. It soon became clear that something special was beginning to happen. Soon they began dating and 18 months later Tommy decided he wanted to propose to Maryanne. They spent as much time together as they possibly could, spending alternate weekends at each other’s homes. 3 years later they married in 1995 and Tommy moved into Maryanne’s family home with her family."

"Their wedding day was perfect, surrounded by family, friends and so much love. 250 people enjoyed the day-long celebration. Maryanne looked like a princess in her beautiful white dress, tiara and long veil. Tommy looked very dapper in his made to measure suit. Maryanne and Tommy then moved into their own flat next door to our mum 15 years ago where they have lived independently ever since. They receive a lot of daily care and help from our mum and me with everyday things. They need help with most aspects of their life but they manage superbly as a team."

"13 years ago they renewed their wedding vows and again 3 years ago. They have now been together for 28 years since Maryanne was 19 years of age. Tommy is 13 years older than Maryanne and he recently celebrated turning 60! On World Down Syndrome day too! Their marriage is like a fairytale and they are the most blissfully happy couple that I know. I think most of us could learn a thing or two from them!"

Winning against all odds

"When they got engaged 25 years ago many many people doubted them, said it was disgusting and they shouldn’t be allowed to get married, they also said that it would never work. But I like to say they are still as happy as they were 28 years ago when they first met. This page shows their love for one another quite clearly, it shows how happy they are, how much they adore each other and it proves to all the doubters that anything is possible with love."

To hold, and to cherish
